Administration (NOAA).
ABSTRACT:
This research aims to evaluate the influence of the El Niño
Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the number of heat and cold wave
events observed in the Metropolitan Region of S{\~a}o Paulo
(MRSP). We used daily maximum and minimum air temperature data
collected in a conventional meteorological station located in the
central area of the MRSP for the period from 1961 to 2019. Heat
and cold waves were identified from metrics based on the
statistical percentile, and the years of ENSO extremes were
obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA). We observed 212 heat waves, and 367 cold waves, with a
greater number of heat waves during the El Niño, and cold waves in
La Niña condition. It is expected that the results from the
present study might collaborate with the understanding on the ENSO
role on the long lasting extremes of temperature.",
